Services: Writing Coach

I offer chapter-by-chapter coaching for people who need encouragement and honest feedback along the way. I will read each piece as you write it and offer you a line-by-line critique, followed by my overall opinion of what I've read.

Advantages:

As your writing coach, I am one step up from your friend or your writing group. I have looked at a wide variety of manuscripts, so I can tell you the strengths and weaknesses of yours, and more importantly, how to make it better. Because I have a responsibility to you as a paid professional, I will always give your work the time and attention it deserves and return it to you in a timely manner. By the same token, I will play the role of the strict teacher who expects you to meet your deadlines and do your best work. And as an objective outsider, otherwise not involved in your life, I will tell you what I really think.

Process
For clients in the Seattle area I begin the coaching relationship by meeting with them to discuss their project. We draw up an agreement about how the work will progress. I do not meet with clients after every chapter; I provide their feedback in writing, generally through e-mail, and we meet at intervals. For clients who cannot come to Seattle, the relationship will be maintained over e-mail, with intermittent phone calls as needed.

Limitations
Of course, choosing this route does have limitations. Seeing your manuscript one chapter at a time as it develops will prevent me from commenting very effectively on matters such as pacing and consistency — the kinds of things that are more evident when reading a whole manuscript at once. However, once the manuscript is complete, I offer my coaching clients a discounted rate on a full edit.
